For twenty years, measuring search was simple: you tracked rankings, impressions, clicks and conversions. Then AI search arrived. Today, a homeowner can ask ChatGPT “who’s the best tree service near Fort Lauderdale?” and get a short list of names — without ever opening a search results page. Google’s AI Overviews answer questions above the organic results. Perplexity cites sources inline. Gemini and Copilot are built into phones and laptops.

If your business is mentioned in those answers, you win attention before your competitors are even considered. If it isn’t, you’re invisible to a growing share of buyers — and your traditional SEO reports won’t tell you.

This guide covers the AI search visibility metrics that actually matter, how to track them without an enterprise budget, and how to connect them to the numbers that pay the bills: calls, form submissions and booked jobs.

Why traditional SEO metrics aren’t enough anymore

Classic SEO reporting assumes that every search ends with a click. AI search breaks that assumption in three ways:

  1. Zero-click answers. When an AI answer satisfies the question, many users never click any result. Your impressions might hold steady while clicks fall.
  2. No fixed positions. There’s no “position 3” in a ChatGPT answer. You’re either mentioned, cited or recommended — or you’re not.
  3. Answers vary. Ask the same question twice and you may get a different list. Visibility becomes a probability, not a fixed rank.

That doesn’t make rankings useless — AI tools still lean heavily on pages that rank well — but it means you need a second layer of measurement on top.

The core AI search visibility metrics

1. Prompt presence (mention rate)

What it is: the percentage of relevant prompts where your business or brand is mentioned in the AI answer.

How to measure it: build a list of 20–50 prompts your customers would realistically ask — “best emergency tree removal in Broward County”, “how much does stump grinding cost in Miami”, “is it safe to trim a palm tree myself” — and run them through the main AI tools each month. Record whether you appear.

Why it matters: this is the AI-era version of ranking. For local businesses, it’s the single most important number.

2. Citation rate

What it is: how often your website is linked or cited as a source in AI answers.

Tools like Perplexity, Copilot and Google’s AI Overviews show their sources. Being cited is stronger than being mentioned: it sends traffic and signals that your content is trusted.

How to improve it: publish clear, specific, answer-first content — guides, pricing explainers, FAQs — that is easier to quote than your competitors’ pages.

3. Share of voice in AI answers

What it is: your mentions compared with your competitors’ across the same set of prompts.

If AI assistants mention three tree services for “Fort Lauderdale tree removal”, and you appear in 40% of runs while your biggest competitor appears in 80%, you know exactly where you stand — and who’s winning the conversation.

4. Position and prominence

Not all mentions are equal. Being the first recommendation, with a sentence explaining why, is worth far more than appearing as the fifth name in a long list. Track:

  • whether you’re mentioned first, in the middle or last
  • whether you’re recommended or simply listed
  • whether the AI explains why you’re a good choice

5. Sentiment and accuracy

AI tools summarise what the web says about you. Check what they actually say:

  • Is the description of your services correct?
  • Are your service areas, hours and contact details right?
  • Is the tone positive, neutral or negative?
  • Are outdated facts — an old address, a service you’ve dropped — still repeating?

Inaccurate answers usually trace back to inconsistent information online. Fixing your Google Business Profile, directory listings and website content usually fixes the AI answer too.

6. AI referral traffic

What it is: visits that arrive from AI tools.

In Google Analytics 4 you can create a custom channel group for referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com and similar domains. Watch how it grows over time and which pages it lands on.

One caveat: traffic from Google’s AI Overviews is counted as regular Google organic traffic, so it can’t be separated cleanly.

7. Branded search lift

When AI tools mention your business, people often go to Google afterwards and search your name. A steady rise in branded searches in Google Search Console — and in direct traffic — is a good indirect signal that AI visibility is working.

8. AI-assisted conversions

The metric that matters most to the business: leads that came from AI search. Add a simple “How did you hear about us?” field to your contact form, and train whoever answers the phone to ask. You’ll be surprised how often the answer is “ChatGPT recommended you”.

Translating classic SEO KPIs into AI-era KPIs

Classic SEO KPI AI search equivalent
Keyword ranking Prompt presence and position in the answer
Organic impressions Mentions across AI tools
Click-through rate Citation rate and AI referral traffic
Share of organic search Share of voice in AI answers
Backlinks Third-party mentions and citations
Organic conversions AI-assisted conversions

You don’t need to throw away your existing dashboard. Add a section next to it.

How to set up AI visibility tracking on a small budget

You don’t need an expensive platform to start. A simple monthly routine works well:

  1. Build your prompt list. Mix service questions, price questions, comparison questions and “best near me” questions for each area you serve.
  2. Test across tools. Run each prompt in ChatGPT, Google (with AI Overviews), Perplexity and Gemini. Use a clean browser or logged-out session where possible to reduce personalisation.
  3. Record the results in a spreadsheet. Mentioned yes/no, position, cited yes/no, competitors named, accuracy notes.
  4. Repeat on a schedule. Monthly is enough for most local businesses. Look at trends, not single answers.
  5. Connect it to GA4 and your CRM. Set up the AI referral channel and the “How did you hear about us?” field.

If you outgrow the spreadsheet, dedicated AI visibility tools can automate prompt testing — but the habit matters more than the tool.

What moves these metrics

Measuring is only useful if you can improve the numbers. The levers are the same ones that drive generative engine optimisation:

  • Fast, crawlable pages. AI crawlers, like Google, struggle with slow, script-heavy websites. Static, lightweight sites built with frameworks like Astro are easy to read.
  • Structured data. LocalBusiness, Service and FAQPage schema give AI systems facts in a format they understand.
  • Answer-first content. Put the answer in the first sentence, then explain. AI models quote clear statements.
  • Consistent business information across your website, Google Business Profile and directories.
  • Reviews and third-party mentions. AI tools rely on what others say about you, not just what you say about yourself.

Reporting AI visibility to a business owner

Business owners don’t care about “prompt presence” as a concept. They care whether the phone rings. A good monthly report puts it simply:

  • “We were recommended in 18 of 40 test questions this month, up from 11.”
  • “ChatGPT now lists the correct service areas.”
  • “AI tools sent 64 visits; 5 of them became leads.”

Keep AI metrics next to calls, form fills and booked jobs, so everyone sees how visibility turns into revenue.

Conclusion

AI search hasn’t replaced SEO, but it has changed what visibility means. The businesses that start measuring prompt presence, citations, share of voice and AI-assisted leads now will know exactly where they stand — and what to fix — while their competitors are still wondering why their traffic graph looks flat.
